The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas greeting card, produced in 19th century England. The then relatively new term Merry Christmas figured prominently in Charles Dickens a Christmas Carol in 1843. The origin of Christmas greeting refers directly to the Christmas holiday and was initially the first greeting used for any holiday in the November to January timeframe. Xmas greetings are popular among Christians and the non Christians alike.
The custom of sending Xmas greetings cards began in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole commissioned a card with an illustration by John Callcott Horsley. A batch of 1000 cards was printed off and sold for a shilling each. At that time the focus was more on the picture than on the Xmas greetings message inside. From around 1860, Christmas cards were produced in larger numbers as printing methods improved.
